[3/3] Create the Culture

Let me ask you to go back in time for a while.

Do you recall your first day at your company? How did you wake up on that morning? What did you feel? Were you excited? Did you have plans to make an impact? Did you want to change things for a bigger and better future? Did you have desire for building the best team ever?

I am sure you recall your first day, your motivation and what you have felt at that time. Maybe it was last week. Maybe you have been working for the company for 25 years but Day 1 is like it happened yesterday.

Now, let’s get back to the present. What about now? How do you feel now? Do you still feel the same or did something change since Day 1? Do you still wake up early in the morning excited about what you want to accomplish? What about your team? Is your team on track to become you wanted them to become? Are they proactive and motivated enough to overcome all the struggles and deliver results?

We often forget why do we do what we actually do during the daily whirlwind. Sometimes you are under water and you feel stuck. Sometimes you feel you wanted something else.

Your team might be also distracted. Maybe they are not functioning as needed. I mean, they are OK, but… somehow something is still missing. A few of them is still enthusiastic and making progress… but the others are just running in circles, wasting their talents and opportunities. Your team feels stuck. There might be some accountability issues or sometimes they just simply loose the focus. Whatever the reason is everything requires too many efforts. Sometimes you question whether they are really committed. It is hard now. You know that something is missing. Something to make it meaningful.

Let me ask you again: what drives you and your team? Is it the same like on Day 1?

If not, then no worries.

The good news is that the solution is in your hands. It is only you who can make a change. Make an impact and start working on it with your team.

Does your company or your team have a why? Is it clear enough?

Is it the same as it was in the past? Do you want to reinforce it? Are you looking for the how?

Here are the 5 steps you can do right now:

  1. Sit down, think about the actual situation. Accept the reality. Everything might be messy now but you will gain clarity quickly.
  2. Get back the focus and define the way you want to get. Focus on the future. Use your imagination and write it down. Keep it simple. Just define where you want to get. At this moment you don’t have to know how you get there. Is the picture you painted exciting to you? Good, then move to the next step.
  3. Bring your team together and get to an alignment. Engage them. Let the team to figure out how to achieve you all want to move toward. Discuss everything back and forth. Get their buy-in. Be open. Be part of the team and create a common plan. Clarify what support the team needs from you to execute it. Let them get enthusiastic and own the plan.
  4. Drive the execution. Make action. Support the team where needed. Create the future and take the risk to work on it. Make sure you link every daily task to it. Eliminate tasks not supporting the vision.
  5. Evaluate progress, make adjustments and keep going. YFDI

I know, you are busy and you feel every second more valuable to deal with the firefighting.

The above process requires to slow down for a while. Have integrity and take a stand.

People want a leader who is taking the company. Lead your team. Be clear, inspiring and practical. This will fire up your team.

Remember, planning is one thing but execution is key. Don’t worry, the momentum your team will gain ensures quick payback. You create a culture which will attract the right employees.  The higher the momentum, the easier it gets. Better decisions will be made. Speed of execution skyrockets. The quality improves significantly.

It does not matter how big your company or your team is. Even if you are a GM of a big manufacturing company or an owner of a small shop, you need to have your why.

Even if your company have its vision, your team needs to have its own why linked to the company’s vision and values. You all have to have a common understanding what they mean to you.

For those who need some help, I am putting together a small video course helping to overcome the obstacles and achieve the desired transformation. Make things meaningful. Have a team which makes the impossible possible.
